 Hundred Acre Vintner, Jayson Woodbridge,
Introduces New Barossa Wines

May 23, 2006, Sonoma, Calif. -- Jayson Woodbridge, known for his critically acclaimed wines under the Hundred Acre and Gold labels, is introducing a new series of estate grown Australian Barossa Valley Shirazes handcrafted by his new winery, Pure Love Wines, priced for everyday drinking at $15. The initial releases, four Shirazes made of “100% pure Shiraz” grown in and around the prestigious “Golden Mile” region of the Barossa Valley, have four distinct identities, each with its own unique label evocative of the place in which the wines are grown and Woodbridge’s and his partners’ very personal philosophy about non-interventionist farming and what goes into making an outstanding bottle of wine.

“The wines have distinct personalities, both in terms of how they taste and how they’ll resonate with different people,” says Woodbridge, speaking of the four wines he has named Layer Cake, Barossa Jack, Maverick Above the Law, and Desert Eagle. “For instance, Layer Cake is a tribute to my grandfather, who always said that the layers of soil in which a well-made wine lives were like a layer cake, providing rich and spicy flavors of fruit, mocha and chocolate...always rich. Maverick Above the Law, on the other hand, honors the approximately 200,000 Californians who sought their fortunes in the Australian gold rush, and were never without their trusty 1851 Navy Model Colt revolvers at their sides.”

“At their core, though, the wines have as many similarities as differences,” continues Woodbridge. “Deep, rich, layered and complex with lush black fruit, fine-grained, soft tannins and just a touch of French oak, they reflect the varied terroir, red mineral-rich soils and extremely dry climate of this dramatic and resilient landscape.”

Woodbridge has owned vineyard land in Barossa for years, having fallen in love with the rugged, outsized personality of the region when he first saw it. Framed by the desert land of the Great Australian Outback in the North, the Great Southern Ocean in the South, and bordered by mountain ranges that reach 2500 feet in elevation, the Barossa Valley represents nature’s constant struggle between ocean and desert, offering what Woodbridge considers one of the few “grand cru” regions of the world and feels is simply the best place on earth to grow Shiraz.

“The Barossa is unlike any other wine region,” says Woodbridge, whose dry farmed vineyards lie in the western and northwestern side of the valley. “There’s a collision of nature there that makes for harsh and extreme conditions, resulting in very low yields and intensely flavored fruit from vines grown on their own rootstocks, never affected by Phylloxera, but struggling to survive there.”

Pure Love Wines, which are made in small quantities, are fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve the lush, textured flavors and aromatics that occur naturally in the wine. Woodbridge takes a non-interventionist approach, using French yeast strains combined with local wild yeasts. The wines are bottled without fining or filtering.

“These wines are sought out by experienced wine consumers and enthusiasts eager for value and greater complexity combined” says Woodbridge. “Layered, aromatic and creamy, they can be enjoyed in a critical setting or in a casual environment.”

Woodbridge intends to expand the varietal offerings from Pure Love Wines as he identifies fruit sources that offer the level of quality and complexity he seeks. Vintage Point, a sales and marketing consulting firm, has been retained to handle sales in North America for the 2005 vintage of the four Shiraz labels and is assigning distributors nationwide to prepare for a June release. “Pure Love Wines offer a value that will please almost any wine lover,” says David Biggar, Managing Director for Vintage Point, adding that “the wines have already generated incredible excitement in tastings as they compare favorably with wines twice their price.”
